Rosalyn M. King, Ed.D, is Professor of Psychology at Northern Virginia Community College and former chair of the VCCS Center for Teaching Excellence for the Northern Virginia Region. She served as Chair for 17 years. For 2018-2019, King was a U.S. Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of the Bahamas and conducted research on environmental science and psychology. She also taught a course in the department of psychology on adulthood and aging.
King has an interdisciplinary background in psychology, education, anthropology, and sociology; and, administration, planning and social policy. Her areas of specialization are in psychology, learning environments, counseling, research design and methodology and process and impact evaluation. King is an educational (cognitive developmental) and research psychologist by training. Her research methodological training includes: experimental, survey, ethnography, phenomenology and mixed methods. She has also worked in the fields of health, learning, counseling and community psychology.
She received her doctoral training at Harvard University in Learning Environments, Administration, Planning and Social Policy and did special study in the Harvard Law School (Constitutional Law and Minority Issues) and the School of Design (Youth in the Urban American Environment).
As part of post graduate studies, King has studied intellectual property laws through four online courses at the Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. In 2008, King studied with Dr. Michael Sandel, Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University in an online course: Justice Online: A Journey in Moral Reasoning, through the Harvard University Alumni Association. In 2009, also through the Alumni Association she studied with Dr. Maria Tatar, John Loeb professor of Germanic Languages and Literature in an online course: Through the Looking Glass-The History, Philosophy and Literature of Childhood. Currently, she recently completed studies on the evolvement and history of China to the present day (China X)with Peter K. Bol, Charles H. Carswell Professor of East Asian Languages Civilizations, Harvard University, Vice Provost for Advances in Learning and William C. Kirby, T.M. Chang Professor of China Studies, Harvard University, Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School and Chair of the Harvard China Fund, through the Harvard EdX program.
King was selected to present a paper at the Oxford Roundtable on the Psychology of the Child at Oxford University, Oxford, England in July 2006. The title of her presentation is the same as her book in its second printing onEnriching the Lives of Children. In June 2008, she studied at International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan on Contemporary and Popular Japanese Cultures and Societies from a historical perspective through a CIEE faculty exchange. In 2009, she presented a paper for the second invitation to the Oxford Round Table on The Three Cultures: Humanities-Literature, Religion and Science. Her paper and presentation culminated in her book: Psychology and Three Cultures: History, Perspectives and Portraitspublished in June 2018 by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. King has a wide and varied range of experiences which includes grass roots, clinical, policy formulation, and higher education — in program development, research & evaluation, postsecondary and college counseling & therapy, and teaching and administration. She has worked in such settings as community-based organizations, federal, state and local government, consulting firms, and colleges and universities.
Her research experiences include serving as director of research for several national large-scale studies mandated by the Congress, the federal government and private foundations. Her academic and professional research interests include a wide variety of topics including: the history and science of psychology; psychology of teaching and learning; innovation and experimentation in educational programs and methods of delivery; and, historical and cross-cultural comparative studies of national and international cultures, life and behavior.
King has taught, worked in a research or program capacity at several colleges and universities in a full-time, adjunct or visiting professor roles, including: the University of North Florida; Clark-Atlanta University; University of Maryland at College Park; Mary Washington College; George Mason University; Catonsville Campus of the Community College of Baltimore County; Prince George’s Community College; Coppin State University; Harvard University; and, the University of the Bahamas.
Dr. King has been at NVCC on the Loudoun campus for the past 23 years, where she teaches or has taught courses in psychology, including introduction (honors option), educational psychology, developmental psychology, child psychology, lifespan human developmental science, research methods for the behavioral sciences, and theories of personality (honors option). She is a constructivist theorist and uses constructivist instructional strategies in the classroom. King is an advocate of community engagement and service learning as important instructional models.
Professional service includes: Chair of Board, East Coast Colleges Social Science Association (ECCSSA); Editor-in-Chief, The ECCSSA Journal; Former member, Education Advisory Board for the University of Virginia’s Northern Virginia Center; and, Former member, Planning Committee of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), 2011 Writing Framework and Assessment for the nation. King currently is a program monitor/Event representative for the Smithsonian Institution’s Resident Associates Program where she monitors assigned lectures and events for the educational arm of the Smithsonian. This role affords her the opportunity to meet some of the top scholars and renowned persons from across the world. Shehas served in this role for approximately 23 years. She provides 50-150 hours of service per year to the Smithsonian Institution.
Dr. King has served on various committees at her institution and chaired the College’s Psychology Review Committee; served as a member of the Student Development Review Committee and faculty member on the Honors Committee. For the Virginia Community College System, she served as the appointed Chair by the Chancellor of the VCCS Center for Teaching Excellence, Northern Virginia Region serving 3 colleges and their satellite campuses; and, as a member of the state-wide Professional Development Committee for nearly two decades, ending her tenure in 2014.
For the past 15 years, King has led study abroad tours with students, faculty and community. She has toured the countries of France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Tetouan, Morocco, Canada, Jamaica, Greece, Turkey, England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Japan and Central Europe–Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Brattislavia, Slovakia, Hungary, England and France. Her 2010 study tour was to Israel and Jordan. Her 2011 tour studied the education system at all levels in China with an excursion to Hong Kong. Her 2012 tour was the Grand Tour of Europe to 10 countries, following in the footsteps of the Grand Tourists. Her 2014 tour was to the Island of Sicily and the city of Rome in Italy. Her 2015 tour studied Ancient Peru and Macchu Picchu, exploring the history, culture and genius of the Inca civilization.
King is a trained professional artist specializing in watercolors, soft pastels and mixed media. She enjoys playing the flute, recorders, piccolo, piano, and her newest hobby, the electronic keyboard.
